Finally! A Saturday with absolutely gorgeous weather, light breeze, no clouds, and not too hot. So this morning, after I had breakfast, I picked up B and NoMH for a trip “to the middle of nowhere” according to NoMH. Actually, we just went to the other side of the river and west a bit to get to the Berry Farm. Neither B nor NoMH had ever been berry picking before. Since I starting going with my Papa when I was knee high to a grasshopper, that came as a complete shock to me. It’s just one of those things, you know? We always went, every May, got a ton of fruit, put a bunch in the freezer, quite a bit in the fridge, and then lots of bread, jam, and freezings.
Anyway, we got out there, took the hayride out to the fields, then started picking. Since I was hoping to pick two boxes myself to their box apiece, they just had to wait. I think between the two of them they pulled in almost 18 pounds, and I picked about 24. This was the first time I had ever been to this farm, the one I grew up going to doesn’t allow you to pick your own berries any longer. They have tons of things for kids, like horse rides and strawberry shooting and clowns making balloon animals, moon bounces, rabbit hills, and wagon train rides. Then something that kids of all sizes could do–instead of a ball pit, it was a shucked corn pit. B and I got in there and had a blast–it was actually VERY comfortable, and nice and cool! We got some fun photos of us goofing off in there.
Then afterwards, we went by my moms to pick up some hostas she split out for me. (She lived on the way back). Finally, since NoMH was starving, we went to the Lebanese Food Festival covered in dirt and straw and pigged out on some awesome food.
Now my afternoon is going to spent trying to cram in everything else I need to do:
- Put in the hostas and mint I took from moms
- Mow the grass
- Make bread (strawberry, of course! And I think lemon poppy seed as well)
- Give the dog a bath
- Prepare the berries for freezing, etc.
- Clean house
Yeah, it’s a busy day. and we can’t forget that I need time to watch the Preakness and sit in the hammock and read, now, can we???
