Random stuff

Here are a few of the random things going through my mind.  It has been a crazy week, and there are just a few things I’ve bookmarked to talk about.

Part I: Update on the week thus far:

So this week has been interesting.  Never been unemployed before, never had to find another job right away–it was always something I could take my time with and not rush into anything.  Thus far I have managed to stick to my self-imposed requirement of five contacts/resumes out per day, and some of it has paid off.  I have had several ‘networking’ meetings, and I had my first interview today.  I am vastly overqualified for it, and he recognizes that I am vastly overqualified for it, but who knows.  Not what I want but it pays well and we can see what might happen with that.

So in addition to the five-a-day rule I have also seemed to be visiting a lot of people this week.  I spent Saturday at the movies with the girls, Sunday at the movies with the girls, and saw the girls briefly at Taco Bell on Monday before having dinner with my nana.  I saw my great friends R&C on Tuesday afternoon and spent the afternoon watching movies and catching up.  (For the record, C picked Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay for our first movie, and R decided to go for the uncut version.  Attend a frat party.  The beer’s usually free and you’ll have more fun.  Dumb, dumb movie!)  Wednesday was supposed to be my first day at home to do laundry and stuff, and instead my neighbor called around 1230 and said come swim in the pool.  We took a break around 330 to get some food, call B to come over for a cookout, etc., and then stayed out until after 8.  I was sunburned, my sides hurt from laughing, and I had a great time. Thursday after the networking meeting I had an invite to go to my cousin’s house.  I hadn’t seen the house yet or the baby since he was born, so I went.  Stayed six hours, had a great time catching up with my cousin’s wife.  Today I had an interview, then my friend H had free tickets to go see Guys and Dolls at the Empire Theater.  That was probably one of the best productions I have seen locally in a long time!

The good thing is that the phone calls seem to have stopped, or at least slowed down.  No more people from Birmingham or South Carolina calling me to say ‘I had no idea you were laid off’ or some such thing, keeping me from getting over it, you know?  I did get a message from the Chairman of the Board tonight, which was quite nice.  I really appreciated it.

Part 2: Am I the last one I know to get on Facebook?

Can’t be.  If so, then I have pitifully few friends.  Look, I joined over a year ago because of the VT shootings.  It was a big thing, I did want to show my support, and blah blah blah.  But something happened this past week and I have been actively involved in it for a change, which means that I spend way too much time creating pieces of flair when I should be job hunting.  It’s the adult version of myspace!  It’s fun!  The novelty will wear off soon, I suppose, but in the meantime I’ve found a few old friends online.  The few that I cared to speak to again after high school!

Part 3:  My love/hate relationship with the TiVo/Cable situation

TiVo is one of the three greatest inventions ever.  (The other two being the iPod and the electric mixer).   My cable is pretty cool too, I don’t have many problems with it.  Except sometimes, it goes to a black screen and I get nothing.  Absolutely nothing.  And it drives me crazy.  So I’ve recorded an hour of my favorite show of black screen.  AARGH.  This means that I missed the final six dance on So You Think You Can Dance this past week, had to tape Burn Notice twice, didn’t get an episode of Joan of Arcadia, and various other issues.  I have the cable guy coming tomorrow–between 8 and 5.  Even comcast gave me a 3 hour window!

Part 4:  I have to go to the dentist

Don’t get me wrong I love my dentist.  He’s been a family friend for years.  But my soft enamel means cavities, and I have yet another.  I usually wait and get it filled at the six month checkup, but since I will have no insurance . . . I called.  Now he has a ten week listing of people trying to get in.  The office girl called me said she had good news and bad news.  Good news: they had a cancellation.  Bad news: it’s at 730 Monday morning.  i didn’t even get up that early when I had a job!  They usually send out day-before phone call reminders, I requested that mine be at 7 AM to make sure I’m ou of bed.  She thought I was joking.  I was not.

I’m so incredibly exhausted right now, I have got to get some shut-eye.  I have a weird news round up for tomrrow, and so I’ll talk to you then!
